Grindstone Caves

Location:

Injasuti Wilderness Area

The caves are very close to the Injasuti Hutted Camp, but the climb up to them may be fairly arduous for beginners.

Co-ordinates (WGS84 / dd mm.mmm):

at metres

Description:

Accommodation: 12

There are two Grindstone caves about 20 metres apart.  Both are relatively long with sufficiently deep overhangs to provide good shelter from the rain.  Each cave is capable of accommodating about 12 hikers, but their combined total has been limited to 12 due to environmental impact reasons (the caves are close enough to one another to be treated as a single cave in this regard).  Both caves are very inviting, but the more westerly one is slightly larger and is therefore the more popular choice.

The caves must take their name from the old mill stone which can still be found there.  How this got there is unknown, but please leave it where you find it!

4
COMFORT

The sleeping areas are level but quite dusty.

2
WATER

In summer you will find a couple of small streams that cut the contour path just past the western cave, but in winter these dry up completely and you will have to carry all your water requirements up from the main camp.

0
POOLS

There are no pools in the immediate vicinity of the caves.

4
SHELTER

The caves provide good shelter from the rain, but they are very exposed to the wind.

4
OUTLOOK

The caves face north and because they are quite high up the side of the valley they afford a fine view of the escarpment on a clear day.
